The spur gear unit has front or toothed wheels arranged on parallel axes. In the simplest form, the spur gear system consists of two shafts, on each of which a gearwheel is arranged. Multi-speed transmissions can be mapped by additional gears and intermediate shafts.
A significant advantage is the comparatively simple design with only a few moving parts, which gives the spur gear transmissions a high degree of robustness. External toothed gears provide a direct transmission, which makes the transmission efficient.
A disadvantage is the higher dead weight compared to planetary gears.
